An interview with Andy Pastalaniec of Chime School. It begins: Jonathan: Andy! How are things in Chime School world? Andy: I wish I could say I had another record in the can, but I tend to focus really intently on whatever I’m working on at the moment, which makes it hard to multitask. The three international tours and the west coast tour we did to promote the Paisley Hotel album took up a lot of my energy so I’m really just now settling back into the creative mode, starting to record material for the next album. I proved a lot to myself on the second album, and don’t feel like I have to reinvent the wheel or change things drastically from record to record. I just keep trying to write good songs and arrange them in an interesting way. I think it may have a more varied sound though, as there’s some other influences I want to mine; early noisy jangly Strawberry Wine-era MBV is a sound in particular that I haven’t quite tapped yet but was always in my mind when I started writing songs. Songs come as they come, but as I start to amass and record them I definitely start to write and arrange with an eye towards album pacing and sequencing. Jonathan: I get a really strong sense of visual identity with the Chime School records; partly courtesy of the lovely cover art and partly 'cos of your look, which is smart, modish and very cool! References to cameras, new-wave cinema scenarios: the girl with the vacant stare, the boy with the bleached haircut. Does it have those qualities by design or is it accidental? Andy: Oh thank you. The cool thing about being creative is all the formative influences from decades of life are in there somewhere. I’ve always felt kind of out-of-time to some degree, always into older movies, music, art, architecture, cars and motorbikes etc. The 80s indie scene was really influenced by the 60s, and I’m really influenced by the 80s doing the 60s and also the 60s, so it’s all there for sure. Pop music and old films go together too of course.
