#genealogysoftware - in light of #MacFamilyTree 11 being released earlier this week, how about a look back at MacFamilyTree 1.9.3 from early 2000 (version 1.0 came out in 1998 for 68k Macs). More screens at the link below. #genealogy #familyhistory

41 years ago today, a little computer was born. Microsoft would create a little spreadsheet app for the Mac the following year - we think of Microsoft Excel now as both a Windows and Mac app, but it started as a Mac app.

We all love statistics in #genealogy, so here is a #genealogysoftware statistic:

From January 1, 2025 - today, January 19, 2025, there have been 28 genealogy programs, major browser extensions, and major plugins that have been updated across all platforms. Those are just the ones I know about.

#ThrowbackThursday for #genealogysoftware - this French Windows 3.0/3.1 #genealogy program was "Chronique Familiale" or "Familien Chronik" released in 1994 by author Reiner Dudde for DataBecker. A decent-looking interface for Win3x programs!

If you are a #Gramps user, the open-source cross-platform #genealogysoftware, there is a new add-on in testing that changes the look/way you interact with Gramps. I don't use Gramps as much as I'd like to, but I really like this add-on.

#genealogysoftware Saturday spotlight - Gedcom-XY-Editor is a free Windows, Mac, Linux #genealogy utility for creating a drop-line chart by editing the (x,y) coordinate positions of persons in a GEDCOM file. It does arrange the persons by family relationships

I have this image of #genealogists in the 1980s working a second job to pay for paper and printer ink/cartridges, and a circle of importing paper records into the computer only to print them out on paper again. That was a problem with a lot of 80s genealogy programs.

More screenshots. Here's what's wild and makes this a special little throwback - 4 years ago, "kaderud" on Github wrote/updated the BASIC files for a 1989 program so that one could output the 1989 data to CSV files to import into modern genealogy software/GEDCOM.

#ThrowbackThursday - Looking back at a piece of #genealogysoftware from 1989 - Genealogy on Display 6.0, created by Melvin O. Duke out of California. Notably, it was still written in BASIC (I ran it with GWBasic under DOS). No GEDCOM. Limit of 500 people and 200 marriages or families.

Ancestor Tree Manager 11.1 was released earlier today - it's a free #Java based #genealogy program that generates an online/HTML family tree from your desktop program's #GEDCOM file. Major update with style additions

#ThrowbackThursday - in the span of 1984-1994, #genealogy programs went from hundreds of records limited by computer RAM/floppy sizes to millions of records. This example - 664 names per floppy, to 2 million names ( #FamilyTreeMaker)

A late Throwback Thursday: What was the first publicly-available #genealogysoftware? John J. Armstrong's ADDNAME and TREE programs, published in Personal Computing Magazine in September of 1979:

#ThrowbackThursday for #Genealogy - once upon a time (in the late 1980s/1990s), when computers could run to over $4,000 USD (adjusted for inflation), it could be cheaper to pay somebody to enter your genealogy data. From a 1991 "The Genealogical Helper" (Everton), these were ads you'd see:

Throwback Thursday for #genealogy - this was an ad from a magazine (Everton's) from 1990. $65 in 1990 = $130 today. The demo might have been a floppy with a stripped down version, or a slideshow or HyperCard stack (No QuickTime)).
The program itself might have been a HyperCard app.
