But we may be at a crossroads, will journals change as research has to become free and APCs are increasingly seen as problematic. What will journals look like in 5 years?

I stayed with secondary content because it provides a venue for researchers to have a voice, and it can be hugely impactful...

And there are pros and cons to being an editor of primary research papers versus secondary content (reviews, Perspectives, N&V, Leading Edge, Editorials etc).

Last week I gave a career pathways talk at the @cruk-ci.bsky.social, highlighting the lessons I have learned after 18 years working at @natureportfolio.bsky.social journals and @science.org. My conclusion, editors are generalists, creative, decisive, fair, and open-minded. It’s hard, but rewarding.
