After the initial eruption, a long hiatus in volcanic activity allowed time for heavy weathering of the topmost layer of lava. So when eruptions resumed, lava accumulated in the valley in a 90m deep lake.

A fantastic finale to a wonderful trip to Derry with the Worshipful Company of Educators was an excursion to the Giant's Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This unique and stunning geological landmark is formed from over 40,000 columns of basalt caused by successive periods of volcanic activity

The murals all over that area of the city tell the residents stories. I was also struck by the sense of hope and optimism for the future that was palpable across the entire city and best symbolised by their beautiful peace bridge across the river and

Just got back from the Master's weekend in Derry with the Worshipful Company of Educators.

For me, the most evocative part of the trip was a walking tour of the Derry city walls and the Bogside, which was the site of Bloody Sunday in 1972.
