Years ago now, but nevertheless. I once recall talking about a potential new hire with a manager and he was considering not hiring, due to the person having a felony on record.

I think he should have pardoned his son.

The problem comes more from going against what he said he'd do, again.

I assume they were joking, but I do agree. Lies will not solve the issue and will only exacerbate it; leading to further distrust.

I would also say though that simply disproving something is akin to saying "you're wrong" when voiced to people who care not for evidence. Unfortunate as it is.
