No, not THAT Andy Wheeler. Not the other one, either. The ex-minor-SF-editor one. Yeah, yeah, I know.

So just to be clear these Paramount Executives are discussing paying money to the incoming president of the united states with the specific intention of influencing an official action of the government?
Holy cow. Executives at CBS’s parent company have discussed settling Trump’s lawsuit against CBS News/60 Minutes, because they need the Trump administration to sign off on a planned corporate merger. www.wsj.com/business/med...

Random phrase that is annoying me for no reason today:

Everything is always in the last place you look for it, by definition. Because you stop looking when you find it.

Sometimes that's even the first place!

Please stop saying this. It means nothing.

one of the reasons I so strongly advocate that the Democrats should seek to overturn the Apportionment Act and radically increase the size of the House if they get back into office is that it helps with literally all three of these problems at the same time
Remember, whatever happens, our broken system keeps the GOP competitive:

— Without the electoral college, Harris would favored.
— Gerrymandering gives the House GOP a 16-seat advantage.
— Seven billionaires donated roughly $800 million to Trump.

This was always the dumbest trademark allowance the USPTO ever granted, giving Marvel & DC joint ownership of the term “SUPER HERO”. And now it’s over! Hooray: Good riddance to a dumb thing! Go forth and use “super hero” in your comics marketing!

Today in "Wait, WHAT?" I learned that Gene Wolfe — recondite, abstruse SF/F author Gene Wolfe — invented the machine that makes Pringles potato chips. It's on the company's own FAQ, which also implies his signature mustache may have inspired their ad mascot. www.pringles.com/en-us/faq.html

Adding this to the ever-growing pile of evidence supporting the position that AI scraping isn't fair use.

Because if you're willing to pay sometimes, you shouldn't get to just take the stuff you don't think is worth paying for.
They’re not even trying to hide it anymore.
“Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says there are complex copyright questions around scraping data to train Al models, but he suggests the individual work of most creators isn't valuable enough for it to matter.”

The world’s solar capacity reached 1,419 gigawatts in 2023, way beyond any predictions. 1 gigawatt = power for a medium sized city ☀️

This seems counterintuitive but this happens everywhere abortion is banned. It's because it reduces overall access to gynecological care, leading to more unwanted pregnancies.
summarizing the current post-Dobbs situation:

a) abortions are up
b) rape/incest pregnancies carried to term also up
c) infant and maternal mortality up

making everything worse for everyone, that's the Conservative Promise
