For those who don't know me: I exist in a liminal space of wanting to engage and talk to people about interesting things but abhor being observed. It makes my skin crawl. As a result, I guard how people interact with and about me fairly tightly.

If you're not sure and you want to be careful, ask.
No, that's fair. The New York Times has definitely never in its storied history been known to suppress, delay, or minimize stories on behalf of actors worried about the impact. Quick question, remind me of the NYT's history with the Holocaust, Holodomor, or even NSA warrantless surveillance?
"I'm a rando who prefers to believe that everything is a conspiracy and am happy to tell women that I know better than she does how their literal job works" That a news org makes an editorial decision you wouldn't (or I wouldn't) doesn't mean someone is killing a story on behalf of a powerful person
"I write for the New York Times, and I can assure you that we've never buried stories on behalf of powerful people, many of those powerful people being part of NYT management. We only publish what's fit to print, like Zohran's application to Columbia that was leaked by a white nationalist"

White Heathcliff? All the scare quotes in the world could not convince me Fennell understands this story enough for it to be self aware.

If any of y'all wanna play a metroidvania with really beautiful art and support an indie studio, you should check out this game. Some really talented people worked very hard on it.

Oh and I also worked on it a little bit.
The wait is over. Today, you meet Luca & Rhem.

In a decade or two, a Jeopardy question will read: "This fictional denomination was once a real one, first minted in 1793 before becoming just a rounding error."

Part of the reason I enjoy media like the Wheel of Time and the Witcher series is because I really enjoy the dynamic social battles of matriarchal organizations. They have a subtlety and nuance patriarchal organizations never have because writers inevitably use threat of physical violence instead.

Nothing frustrates me more as a Wheel of Time fan than when folks claim the Forsaken represent the strongest channelers to join the shadow. Aside from obvious top people, we actually don't know that. We only know that the 13 we see were the surviving dreadlords. Channeling strength might not be why.

I don't think the average person understands how hard it is to build non-buggy games today. The sheer diversity in hardware, firmware, and software is absurd and games frequently push every part of that equation to limits no other software does. The ubiquity of playable titles is a modern miracle.

I had a prospective student tell me they learn best through the Socratic Method, followed by telling me they don't do well with ambiguity. I'm entirely unsure what they're looking for.

If you use the word "junior" to describe a game dev position seeking someone with *at the minimum* a full, credited AAA role performing that position already, I'm simply going to assume you're trying to pay them less. AAA games take an average of 3.5 years to make. Nobody's a junior at 4 years in.

Every time I see a moderate arguing that some social change is coming too fast, I am reminded that a significant number of people in the antebellum South argued that they were fine with abolishing slavery, if only we could find a way to do it that didn't leave "good folks going hungry."

You know the nail polish drama is gonna be good when the content creator begins with "Okay, it took a lot of work to obtain but I want to start by explaining some things I see on their product's Safety Data Sheet." 😬

Megyn Kelly insisting that men who chase 15 year-olds is different from an "actual pedophile" because they like "young teen types" not "actual children" is a lot to unpack. It makes me nauseous and I worry for any child, of any age, which ever has to depend upon her discernment.

The sheer effort of laying out everything wrong w/ this argument *&* the fact that it's meaningless to even do so unless & until the full force of the law is levied at these people who are themselves the literal enforcement arm of the law is further evidence that we are all dead & this is superhell.
New incredible detail here: ICE says a match in its facial recognition app Mobile Fortify is a "definitive" determination of a person's status, and that this overrides birth certificates. This is an app ICE is using in the field to scan people

This just in: People who make more money the fewer people it takes to produce their product say that technology which reduces the number of people it takes to produce their product is something they can see some people supporting! 🙄
-One CEO fellates the use of gen AI in video games
-Dozens of GAME DEVS call BS

"Of course, not everyone is against the use of AI in game development... Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said..."

Putting on my editing hat, I feel "not everyone" being another CEO should have been the highlighted point.
As the CEO of Arc Raiders publisher Nexon says AI is everywhere, game devs call 'bullshit'
AI use in game development is a conversation that's not going away anytime soon, despite many developers railing against its use.

Alongside and beneath this problem is the trend in TTRPG to insist that people cannot enjoy playing a roleplaying game together where one of them is officially the protagonist. Everyone has to be the hero or nobody can be, despite the media that players are emulating outright rejecting that premise.
I know this may come across as unreasonable, but I feel like when I pick up an officially licensed TTRPG adaptation of some piece of media, it shouldn't be a coin toss whether there will be any mechanism for playing as the sorts of characters the game's ostensible source material is actually about.

I feel like a lot of people don't grasp that "I was (terrible thing) but I changed, so can they" marks you as unsafe to communities victimized by that thing. YOU think you're safe (and you might otherwise be) but your empathic actions and words towards their victimizers makes you a gateway to risk.

It's funny how the future of the Democrats we're bombarded to consider always looks like the past of the Republicans. Not so much "haha" funny as "maybe we should leave before things get weird" funny.
You have to understand what pieces like this from the NYT are and are not.

They are not an honest assessment of the state of politics today.

They are a negotiation tactic—an effort by a calcified, right-leaning legacy institution to steer the discourse in a direction more palatable to elites.

I had someone recently ask me why I disliked conservatism. I had to gently explain: Even if we set aside the things it has mutated into today, I am a dozen different identities that were persecuted in the past you're trying to conserve. Your traditions are not atomic; they come as a package deal.

...his pre-election history includes cosponsoring an act easing changes to gender on govt records, supporting the shield law blocking LEAs from reporting to other states about gender-affirming care performed in NY and writing to support prop 1 protecting vs gender/sexuality discrimination in NY.
How are people still talking about Mamdani and the idea he's going to impose sharia law on NYC?

1. NYC would have to be willing tolerate it, and lol

2. There's nothing I've ever heard him say that implies he hates the lgtbq community or women

3. The call is coming from inside the house here.

I have never seen Vanilla Sky because they shut down twenty blocks around Times Square and made me miss a Broadway show to film a scene of Tom Hanks running through the empty streets.
What’s your pettiest reason for refusing to watch a movie or TV show?

I’ll start: I refuse to watch Greatest Showman because they had Jenny Lind, a professional opera singer, belting

Yesterday I gave a friend a gift that they'd never seen before: A cast iron fish for cooking. I know they're vegetarian and have been rather fatigued lately. Imagine their confusion as I presented it to them and said it might help. We had to talk about how to use it. 🤣

Please do not insist people who had strokes or other disabling psychoneurological events developed personality, mood, empathy or cognitive impairments as a result. It's ableist as fuck and, worse, it uses that ableism to avoid asking "were they always this way and why did I not discern that before?"
