"Absolutely essential reading for anyone interested in the convergences of human & plant lives. Full of joy, sorrow & brilliant insight, this book forever changed how I think about trees & American ecology & history."

Exactly! AI might be able to make one static frame of somethin that looked sort of like this (unless you looked too closely) but it doesn't think, plan, or comprehend 3D shapes. It will never produce anything but superficially pretty slop.
AI could never !

Missing the Lights tonight plus a fireball meteor shower, and feeling blue for a lot of other reasons. But also inspired by a recent burst of clarity and creativity, and remembering that I’ve had plenty Lights and plenty meteors.

Something new is coming soon. Something big. And I’m ready for it. ☄️

Good news. “The range of PET-degrading enzymes spontaneously evolved in the deep sea provides models to be optimized in the lab for use in efficiently degrading plastics in treatment plants and, eventually, at home.”

New enzyme motif shows how ocean microbes are evolving to digest plastic — and could help future cleanup efforts.

(also, still in existential crisis mode. This liminal space feels soft and pointless. I don’t recognize this utter ambiguity. At least when I go down to the crossroads, I know what I’m up against and why, and I’m ready to sell yet another of my souls. Right now, not sure I even have one left.)

Tomorrow is Monday, which means back to the grind. Right now, the only grind is looking for gainful employment, and I’m getting less and less picky about the what and where of that. In years past I’ve picked grapes and I’ve dug ditches, and rn I’d be happy to do that kinda work again.

A Christian committed a horrific act of home-grown terrorism by blowing up the Federal Building in Oklahoma City, and yet Oklahoma City has elected several Christian mayors since then. How the hell can that happen?

omg, I love this poster art. "Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears! I caw CAW CAW CAW CAW"

Wish I were in San Diego to catch this free show at the library. I doubt they're actually played by birds (or dressed up like them), but what do you expect for free.

I never met Jim, but I’ve met living Kermiteers and I’ve worked with puppeteers who worked alongside Jim. I wish I could have known him in person, but I’m glad we get to see his work to this day. There’s none other like him.
Two beats of note in the end of Jim Henson’s conversation with Terry Wogan... One, how Jim wasn’t precious about Kermit being a puppet, without sacrificing his believability as a character - which plays to Two, that delightful little handshake at the end.

I might pop into New York City for a couple days soon. Who’s there? I talk a lot of shit about the place (sorry!) cos I’m really really not a city mouse, but oh, it’s so fun to visit. I wanna see some shows. I wanna eat some eats. What’s a country mouse to do?

Okay, so if I were, say, a melanistic jaguar, and for some reason I didn’t want to also be called Gat, what’s a good name?

The scents of my body change from place to place. In some places, I smell amazing. Where I’m staying right now, my pits reek an unholy reek, and no sir, I don’t like it. I’m supposed to be here another couple weeks, and I’m not sure I can stand my own aroma that long. Bleh.
