Soooo I actually wrote about this for a newsletter that came out today…
Five Years On In April 2020, I read the book Pale Rider: The Spanish Flu of 1918 and How It Changed the World by Laura Spinney. Deep in the early Covid-era confusion, I took a weird comfort in the similarities with the events of a previous century, right down to the conspiracy theories and denials. I struggled to understand the post-crisis events—the lack of a marked end, that at some point the world just inches forward. Even more puzzling to me was Spinney's descriptions of how little the pandemic was memorialized. After such a huge crisis, people rarely wrote about it or made art about it, as if everyone simply wanted to forget it all happened and move on. But as it is said, those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. Looking back five years after the start of the Covid pandemic, I get it now. It's hard to reflect on something that both is over, as a collective emergency, and is not, in the scars it left on our minds and our city. I spent much of 2020 talking to restaurant owners and staff, hearing about their pivots and plans, crushed hopes and paused dreams. If I wanted to do my own little part to remember this time period, I knew where I had to start: With the restaurants that opened in 2020 and managet to survive, against all odds, for a half decade.

Oh blessssss do I love how this is worded, I hope other places take a cue! (To be clear, this is a high end spot, and I am particularly enamored of the section on devices)
All ages are welcome in our dining room but we ask that children be prepared for a lengthy dining experience. Children prone to draw attention to themselves should stay home. We do not allow tablets or phones to entertain children at the table and we will request devices used in this manner to be turned off. Dining as a family is a part of the fabric of this place, but it is an art best practiced long before your reservation. For the communal sake of our dining room please choose wisely.
