A few pics from the launch for photographer Ming De Nasty's "Residents" project at Liverpool's Open Eye Gallery. Part of city-wide arts festival Homotopia. The portrait exhibition captures Liverpool's broad LGBTQAI+ community around politics, identity, and place.

The most scary and dystopian thing about Alien: Earth is that the only consumable media in the future appears to be Disney. In the first episode two scenes in which media content is watched in different geographies, locales is other Disney texts including Peter Pan and Pixar's Ice Age.

New Queer Cinema apparently includes "Milk" and "Fox." I will hopefully be setting the record straight on the fiction of New Queer Cinema as "an irresponsible canon" (the chapter title) when the book on AIDS and independent cinema is actually finished. PS 'Without you I'm Nothing" is actually great!

The type-set pages are in now for 'Screening Adult Cinema' edited by @ffreibert.bsky.social Peter Alilunas, and Des Embree. My own 'Boys in the Sand' (1971) is one of the 39 chapters in the book. More on the forthcoming book and chapters can be found here: www.routledge.com/Screening-Ad...

Another sign I need to write about Dario Argento's relationship to Italian fashion at some point. A nod to the history of the giallo, Argento, and Italian style, Bottega Veneta's “Craft is our Language” celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Intrecciato leather weave with these guanti dell'assassino

watched something I hadn't seen since - Ninja III: The Domination (1984) - aerobics + Flashdance + Exorcist + Poltergeist + 80s ninja craze + synths. Had a look at the original Canon pre-prod sexy ninja pitch and the post-prod ad with "the most fearsome ninja ever known" + fearsome blow-dry volume

In the 1980s, the BBFC was so OTT censorious even words like "Chainsaw" and "Ninja" were banned that VHS artwork and beloved cartoons credits had to be changed/edited.

Here's two examples of fortress UK. Spot the difference

Comparatively speaking - are they shorter than the shorts in "Sleepaway Camp" short?

John Waters HBD today. He is 79. My journey in life was irrevocably changed when I rented Female Trouble on VHS late 80s when "queer culture" was basically Jarman on UK TV. Seeing Waters' films I knew I was a Waters punk not a Jarman boy. Criterion extra was high point and of course a Mink tattoo

a certain transphobic newspaper asking its readers to "share your memories" and tributes for the passing of Pope Francis
Well, we learned a new word in 2024 just when we thought the papacy had run out of new ways to be homophobic they gave us “frociaggine”

Binged White Lotus 3 waiting for "it" and my what an overreaction to an incestuous plot line. anticlimax. What a low bar for where that could have gone but instead rendered fairly "safe" through its mediation & orchestration by two female characters, some drugs, and woozy, vague flashbacks. Cop out!

Inspiring Sylvia Rivera calling out gays even back in 70s for dismissal of trans & her later disappointment and despair. This pain and rage that Sylvia carried, what we see today in the hostility towards our trans kin, is that rage being channeled now. Clip from 2023 doc The Stroll I posted on insta

What a shitty week starting with a transphobic UK ruling and now RFK's ongoing eugenics plan (plus deportations, incarcerations etc) Neither seeming to understanding sex or autism, nor even caring to do so anyway. Openly hostile, asserting "governance" & "eradication" peak fascist necropolitics.

I was super invested in this butch character, her pinstripe suiting and general bossiness as the "manager" of the various Tianjin martial arts academies in '100 Yards' (2023) only for her to be given no fight scene and then killed off within the first 25 minutes. Huh! Good kung fu, bad for butches.

"complied from dancefloor reaction at over forty U.K. gay clubs and discos"

Now that's both a methodology and a metric I can really get behind. Just look at the results! From "Gay Times" Aug 1984
