here's the 30-second version: There's 9 types of social investment - each has their own political dynamics, different normative underpinnings, & different consequences.

By talking about social investment in the singular we risk comparing 🍎 and 🍊!

I'm hiring another postdoc (research-focused, for almost 5 years) for my @erc.europa.eu project on the educational cleavage!
I'm looking for someone with strong quantitative text-analysis skills (e.g. #NLP, #LLM, etc.) to study the role of political actors in cleavage formation.

On the DEMAND-side especially people's eductional background matters: higher educated people are much more likely to support invests in the future.
Moreover, positions on the second dimension (GAL-TAN) matter: universalists support social investments, particularists support social compensation.

We find that on the SUPPLY-side (only) some policy attributes matter: policy fields, time horizons, and the distributive effects (but only in retrenchment scenarios, which is normative speaking quite worrying!). Check the paper for details.

Welfare states around the globe are challenged by several cross-pressures: deindustrialization, demographic change, debt brackets, (im)migration, etc.Yet, reforming them is hard, as public opinion often is a de facto veto point. Under what conditions are people willing to reform & invest in future?
