Ken Kendrick (art director of The NY Times Magazine) took this photo of fashion designer Patrick Kelly’s studio wall c. 1989. Kelly’s quirky fashion often featured colorful buttons. Both rising stars died of aids in the early ‘90s. Kelly at 35. Kendrick at 43.
