Reintroduction time? Former grad student, gamer, composer, geek. I generally post about about Linux and video games. I desperately need to finish some music. (I used to use csound and LISP, but am teaching myself supercollider.) I think 12-tone equal temperament is boring.
The one good thing about the oprah podcast talking about parental estrangement? The hospice nurse talking about how dying parents wanting to contact their offspring who've cut them off is mostly manipulation.

Grrf. Shrink-flation. My grandmother used to be able to get 6 oz bags of butterscotch chips. Now they come in 11 oz bags. :/

I wonder if they've done any studies of levels of radiation measured in dentists/dental assistants? They're exposed to it day after day, and radiation is cumulative. (Granted, the average dental x-ray is very low, too.) I don't think I've seen a dentist wear a dosimeter or anything.

Oh good lord. Youtube comments someone being precious about raw eggs in real egg nog. Like, come on. there's so much booze in it, absolutely nothing is going to grow in it, and it denatures the egg proteins.

Pretty bold of people to assume I went to "privileged" schools growing up. My dad was on disability & neither parent had more than a semester of college (my mom had a few community college classes.) My high school was too poor to have computers.

I'm not "afraid" of AI. It will never be able to do what I do. I'm concerned about people outsourcing their critical thinking skills to a glorified Markov chain.

The movie "House of Dynamite" is not your usual nuclear war flick. What makes it so horrifying is that it's only the 20 minutes before and a bunch of ordinary people having to make horrible decisions on not enough information. (That and the horror show of what our government is actually like.)

mmm. Grilled cheese and caramelized onion sandwich for lunch. Used to get them at CalArts, since they were a couple bucks. The guys at the grill would put onions on, no extra charge. (They also taught me how to make real salsa.)

What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!
