Today in 1969 Tampa police order the crowd at a Janis Joplin concert to sit due to safety concerns. Janis' response: “don’t f*** with those people”. After her set she is charged with using “vulgar and obscene language”, cuffed and booked into jail, posting bail an hour later.

Today in 1977 the plane carrying the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd from Greenville, SC to Baton Rouge, LA ran out of fuel and crashed near Gillsburg, MS. Among the dead were vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, 29, guitarist Steve Gaines, 28, and backing vocalist Cassie Gaines, 29.
