He/him/ia. Economist convinced that business-as-usual is not the answer. Have data & evidence. Applied to be academic, but didn't know secret handshake. Paid my dues as consultant, then public servant. Now back in comfort zone of cricket and spreadsheets.
.... Ouch ... is suspect that 'other place' will be in turmoil ... 🤣.

For those believing we’re “turning the corner” …

Number unemployed, other jobless, or wanting to work more hours all at 21-yr Sept high.

Total 394,000 people - with families, whānau, mortgages/rent to pay, & food to put on table.

No way we should accept this as feature of economy.

💔😢☹️😠😡

The direction where this administration wants to take our health service in its next term is clear.

This should be central to the next election campaign.

But if clickbait nonsense continues to prevail, the outcome is unlikely to be welcome by many💔.

Irrespective of the politics (which I'm happy to leave to others more expert in that field🙂), the economics of this letter is just plain irresponsible misinformation.

The homilies ... "we can't afford it", "debt is bad" abound😡.

But, we are not stupid ... ganeshnana.substack.com/p/spending-b...

Final figures in for Māori wards "referendum"😠. A resounding margin of nearly 74,300 (over 7%, 53.7% v 46.3%) in favour❤️.

But, of course, lots more to do.

Toitū Te Tiriti.

Take care all, keep well, be safe, stay strong.

Kia kaha.

The least-wealthy are being punished the most by education (student) loans🤔.

The powerful keeping the powerless in "their" place.💔😠

"... it is a cliche to talk about the rich getting richer, while the poor get poorer. But, ... we - as a nation - have seemingly become so immune to this utter failure of our economy and ... the dereliction of our duty to our people & communities."

"as the least-wealthy sought further education over the years to 2024, in a perversity that I can only describe as incredulously cruel, a noticeable component of the loss of wealth of the least-wealthy was a disproportionate increase in student debt."

Yeah, nah ... the same "international turmoil" that saw GDP growth in the June quarter across the G20 average plus 0.9% ...

"Twas fault of global turmoil and tariffs .."

An incredulous explanation of 0.9% decline in NZ June quarter GDP.

For the record, OECD reports G20 (ie big players) June quarter GDP *up* 0.9%.

That's some HUGE discrepancy yet to be explained🤔

NO!

Is def NOT 8/10 of export revenue - more like 4/10 (2023 export pic is below), as services (tourism, educ, engineering, other services) export revenue about 3/10. Then there's manufg (other goods) plus others.

FYI: exports about 2.5/10 of GDP.

No idea what 8 out of 10 referred to😠.

Tautoko.

Need to up our economics knowledge & understanding, & commentary that follows #nzpol.

The conflation of economy with business is a (very successful) ruse.

Need to specify objective we want economy to deliver, and then measure economic success by its ability to deliver on that objective.

For geeks ... also for those interested in facts ...

Resources (people & services) being hollowed out of the public sector.

Public sector %GDP forecast to be at 40-year low by 2029.

Scale of hollowing-out further diminishes ability & capability of public sector to deliver public services.
