This convo I had highlights the difference in what "respect your time" means in games.

A lot of players want to trade time for in-game progress. It's purely transactional: 1 hour = 1 progress

But I want to feel like my actions matter i.e. what I do with time creates progress, not time itself.

Saw this RPG evolution chart on reddit. Been there, tried to map it like this... it's just not worth it.

It leads to oversimplification and removes all the nuances that make it so interesting. Like, when Dungeon Master pioneered real-time dungeon-crawlers in 1987, they were inspired by Flight Sims!

It's crazy how the GBA library is like a dozen all-time bangers and 800 games based on failed media franchises where you roam around barren isometric environments finding 5 different kinds of collectibles

We are still paying for the early days of game studies as a field where games/play were heavily mystified as a special objective world of "rules" and "systems" rather than a much more subjective space of expression.
Disco Elysium is a great work of art that is also a relatively weak game, and does not make a strong case that games are art because it doesn't do what the best games do, which is allow meaning to emerge from the intersection of game mechanics and the player's decisions.
Seems we have a Discourse. Disco Elysium is the best opportunity gamers have to convince non-gamers that games are art. I’ve converted half a dozen.

Trust this English PhD dropout that DE is the most innovative novel of the century. Because it’s a game. Play it and fall in love.

When did game studies start? & what & WHO is at the core of game studies? Fields are defined as much by what they are NOT as by what they are & their borderlands can be hotly contested spaces.
