My first @umasschan.bsky.social/@impvienna.bsky.social affiliated paper is up!

tomtom-lite is a re-implementation of tomtom targeting the ML age of genomics. Fast annotations ("what is this motif?") and simple large-scale discovery of motifs.

Check it out!

Can’t believe the whole country has to suffer through the return of Dickensian childhood diseases because the worst, most ignorant attention-demanders decided other people’s expertise makes them feel bad

I am seeing a lot of posts about Rosalind Franklin that themselves ignore her publication record on DNA!

In fact Franklin and Gosling's paper, including the famous Photograph #51, was published, along with Wilkins's paper, back-to-back with the Watson and Crick paper in Nature in 1953.

building housing reduces the cost of housing, period, whether it's luxury or professional class or "affordable." when demand exceeds supply, people who can afford better settle for something less, pushing everyone else further down. just build housing! JUST. BUILD. HOUSING

It's not necromancy, it's postmortem communications
Speaking with the dead, or necromancy, is explicitly forbidden in the bible multiple times
Churches showing an AI Charlie Kirk telling congregants, through an artificial voice, not to let evil win is a new level of instrumentalizing the dead.

When Trump goes, I think we’re going to see the same thing. Visions and AI slop will abound. Prophecies and messages from beyond the grave.

I also find it hilarious that all of them consider "trading crypto" as a job.

Like my brother in Satoshi, what have you produced for society ?
If I chose to invest in speculative bubbles I would simply sell before the bubble burst, maybe I’m built different

I think we should bring back actual drawings, and take a picture / scan !

What's the point of wasting 2 days making a pretty svg of something that takes 5 minutes to draw with a few sharpies and a notebook, that doesn't create anything new
Begging scientists (and media posts about science) to stop using ChatGPT-generated images

Now that I'm settled in at @umasschan.bsky.social, I'm hiring at all levels: grad students, post-docs, and software engineers/bioinformaticians!

The goal of my lab is to understand the regulatory role of every nucleotide in our genomes and how this changes across every cell in our bodies.

I was delighted to have the unexpected opportunity to give a keynote at MLCB 2025 in NYC last week. I used it to explain how I view deep learning models in genomics not as "uninterpretable black boxes" but as indispensable tools for understanding genomics + designing the next gen of synthetic DNA.

My talk on #Composability in genomic software at #SciPy2025 is up on YouTube where I showcase both #anywidget and #oxbow.

Thank you to the organizers for the opportunity to present this to both computational biologists and the wider scientific computing community!

CDC employees: What are you gonna do about the shooting that happened in Emory
RFK Jr: Have you seen THESE guns ?
RFK Jr., Hegseth and Duffy are doing performative public workouts instead of their actual jobs and, what's even more pathetic, they are not remotely good at working out.
Sean Duffy has a Fox host help him do 3 pull-ups.

Right, the only thing we should be anthropomorphizing are viruses, cancer, and drugs, as your bio teacher intended :p
100% endorse. LLM are not people. They are not alive. They are not sentient. They do not think like people think. They do not have experiences. But we use language all the time that muddies this water (and which serves commercial interests by misleading the public about the power of these tools)
Relatedly I think journalism could maybe use stronger professional style norms around not anthropomorphizing the computer systems we report on/reference in our writing.

The adamant elite refusal to call bullshit is a big part of How We Got Here.

The prevailing cultural attitude for years is you must not, under any circumstances, treat anything as bad faith. You are obligated to find some reasonable idea and engage with that, even if you distort to get there.

UnitedHealth secretly pressured nurses to change patients' records to include DNRs (Do Not Resuscitate) without their consent, so those patients would die instead of being saved with medical interventions that could cost UnitedHealth money.

This is murder.
