National Park budgets have been cut by 40% since 2010

With this year's budget in England, that has gone up to nearly 50%

The outcome?
❌Land sell off
❌Visitor centre closures
❌Redundancies
❌Projects for nature & climate cut

We must Stop the Cuts. Take action today 👇 www.cnp.org.uk/support/camp...

DYK, traditionally horses were measured in ‘hands’ (approx. 4 inches) i.e., the span of a man’s hand across the palm. Dealers counted the number of times they could place one hand on top of the other from floor to wither (base of neck where it meets the shoulders) to calculate the horses height.

If you ask the public about what National Parks are for, the same answer comes up time after time. Wildlife. Nature. Places to connect with the wild.

A ‘nature first’ commitment could be the basis for a new social contract between the National Parks and the nation.

It’s time to put nature first in our National Parks
As world leaders meet to discuss the global biodiversity crisis, our Chief Executive, Dr Rose O’Neill, argues it’s time to prioritise nature.

When I was little, I used to cry myself to sleep for want of a pony. Every year I used to enter the @whsmithofficial.bsky.social ‘Win a Pony’ competition, but without success. I’ve never met or heard of anyone who won. Have you? #JustCurious

Nobody ever planted a tree in this photo. It was a working gravel pit 30 years ago.

We need to get over our obsession with planting trees and let nature do the job. The results are just SO much better.

It's also about realising we are not, in fact, central to everything. 🌍

I'm looking for Masters students to join my lab in Fall 2025! Work could focus on either field-based studies of plant community ecology and trait-based ecology and/or computational work (on any taxa with data) focusing on questions in community ecology or macroecology.

In 1888, Rev. Gunning, the Vicar of Boldre, complained to the Court of Verderers that the 'disgusting' behaviour of the male donkeys on the #NewForest prevented respectable people visiting him and stopped his daughters from looking out of the windows or going out! #OoherVicar

As UK farmers prepare to make their voices heard, it’s a good moment to reflect on rural protest. Here’s a thing from @themerl.bsky.social.

Peatland is an ecological marvel but one of the most unappreciated of all landscape features. It has suffered massive eradication due to historical and continued drainage for agriculture, forestry, development etc. The #NewForest has many examples of this precious habitat. #BOG
