This piece in the AMERICAN SCHOLAR tries to correct some widespread misconceptions about the genesis and publication of ON THE ROAD and apportion credit and some blame where both are due. It derives from my book on Cowley, THE INSIDER, coming in November.

People are having very strange conversations with ChatGPT, in which they discover secret cabals or conspiracies or that we are all in fact living in The Matrix.

It sends these people into delusional spirals.

Then ChatGPT tells them to email me about it.

This week's #WITHPod is so good. I highly recommend a listen. GenAI is such a powerful tool. But it shouldn't be used to replace thinking. Let it diagnose rare cancers and write excel equations, but don't let it steal your unique ability to THINK and create.

The Empire of AI by Karen Hao is a brilliant history of “AI” which focuses on the impact the industry is having on the environment, on creative people whose work is stolen to train the products, on communities near data centers, etc. Inescapable conclusion: AI is a scam w/ real world harms.
