Finally out! For the first time, The Lancet has published a critical paper on the science of Early Childhood Development (#ECD).

As an interdisciplinary team of authors, we call on the ECD field move beyond the widespread use of deficit-based models.

An important short correspondence by @gabrielscheidecker.bsky.social et al. pointing out that the Lancet’s ‘Next 1000 Days’ series risks repeating “a deficit model, which can cause harm by promoting negative stereotypes about people living in poverty.”

In our new paper "Help can harm," Nga T.T. Mai and I examine the unintended consequences of parenting interventions among Vietnamese migrant families in Germany. We argue that such harmful effects deserve much closer attention.

Fab essay from member @gabrielscheidecker.bsky.social: "early childhood science implicitly promotes Western, urban middle-class skills and behaviours... a child has reached their full potential when they behave and think like a Western, urban middle-class child."
