Good summary. I ride my own bike most of the time. But also use Lime frequently. Lime and Forest bikes are super popular for the under 30s in London. A little pricey but super convenient and quick to get around

The amount of telecom industry news flow and pre-briefing ahead of #MWC2025 is... a lot. Impossible to keep track of everything interesting going on.

At the event itself (and associated dinners/drinks) I prioritize in-person meetings and catchups, largely with non UK folk

A few comments on in here that many smartphone users would settle for:

5G only needs to be so fast
Cameras only so good
Screens only so bright
Charging only so rapid

The no compromise seems to be battery life

Why Verizon hid its 5G network in the Super Bowl stadium
Finding Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile's antennas and radios installed throughout Caesars Superdome is no easy task. But the service providers planned it that way.

23,500 of 81,000 UK sites now have 5G. That's about 25% growth in 5G sites in about a year. Of these 23,500, only 3,300 (15%) are 5G standalone, carrying 14% of the 5G traffic.
New 5G figures reported by @ofcom.bsky.social yesterday. We updated our mobile data usage and revenue analysis with them: tefficient.com/is-the-end-o... The UK's 5G proportion of traffic increased to 21.2% (in July 2024) but its growth rate was a bit slower than elsewhere in Europe.

At the Telecom TV event on Telco AI in London today. 2nd year of the event… Last year a bunch of discussion about telco-specific LLMs… doubt we’ll hear much of that again in 2024.

Industry structure is a perennial, fascinating topic in telecom. @daringfireball.bsky.social sets out each end of the spectrum. Telecom is somewhere in between.

It shows why consolidation and regulatory relief are critical for operators' economic prospects.

Directionally, Ericsson has the right idea for mobile operators: try and monetize value

The challenge, of course, is how?

The most advanced operators already offer the best service making it harder to demonstrate the value of premium connectivity

As 5G SA gathers pace, Ericsson urges telcos to focus on value over volume
Ericsson's latest Mobility Report predicts that global 5G standalone (SA) connections will top 3.6 billion by 2030.

An achievement for 20 people, for sure. But explains why this app lacks features and finesse.
With a fully remote team of just 20 employees, Bluesky has surpassed 20 million users in its first year since opening to the public and is stealing thunder from rivals hundreds of times its size.

At a time when conventional wisdom among bosses is that workers must be in-person to be productive.

Nvidia’s growing cash hoard points to M&A

Interesting piece. References Mellanox and speculates (lightly) on Marvell and other potential networking targets:

"Nvidia could in theory buy an optical networking firm like $16 billion Coherent"

Breakingviews - Nvidia’s growing cash hoard points to M&A
Nvidia is making so much money that founder Jensen Huang doesn’t know what to do with it all. The $3.6 trillion chip designer is spending more on dividends and buybacks, but its cash pile is still growing, doubling over the past year to $35 billion amid a frenzy for the company’s artificial-intelligence chip designs. Combined with Huang’s prodigious ambition and a more lenient antitrust stance under President-elect Donald Trump, M&A may be back on the menu.

How tightly linked are AI RAN and open RAN?

My blog published on Friday

The new Heavy Reading Open RAN Operator Survey (5th edition) identifies a strong link between AI RAN and open RAN, but not everyone puts the two technologies on a straight-line continuum.

Update to this old post. Since a while back, @matrix.org now has a bridge to @signal.bsky.social. Works really well
Best "fediverse" app I've used is @matrix.org. We have a home server and use it for family messaging, video, etc.

It has all the features, you can choose your clients (Element has a gorgeous web app for PC), and no dependencies on Google, Facebook, Apple, etc.
