One thing I'm going to be spending some time on during my Capitalism Sabbatical™ is open social. Open social is open source social media. Think Activity Pub, Mastodon, ATProto, bluesky, etc. It's a whole world, and just like open source there's more there than you think and it's maturing fast.
I've started an interview series on my blog to highlight people building on these open protocols. So far I've talked to:
- one of the people building my blog platform (Leaflet)
- an engineer who makes a utility that lets you follow & interact across Activity Pub and ATProto (Bridgy Fed)
- my high school english teacher (no direct connection to open social, but he was a great guest)
- two Spanish college friends who built a federated Tumblr clone, Wafrn, that's just a very delightful place and community.
If anybody knows anybody building cool stuff on open protocols let me know and I'll chat with them! And if I've at all piqued your curiosity about open social:
