Hungarian lawmakers have passed a controversial constitutional amendment that further restricts LGBTQIA+ rights. On 14 April, the amendment, proposed by the ruling party Fidesz, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, was approved with 140 votes in favour and 21 against, meeting the required two-thirds majority. The new law allows the government to ban LGBTQIA+ gatherings, including Pride events, citing the protection of children's "physical, mental, and moral development." It extends Hungary’s previous "child protection" legislation, which restricts the "demonstration or promotion" of homosexuality to minors under 18. This amendment follows the fast-tracking of a law last month that banned public LGBTQIA+ events. In response, thousands have protested across the country in weekly demonstrations. The law also enables authorities to use facial recognition technology to identify individuals attending banned events like Budapest Pride, with fines up to 200,000 Hungarian forints (approximately $546/£418). In addition, the amendment asserts that only two genders - male and female - are recognised in Hungary's constitution, expanding upon a previous law that prohibits same-sex adoption. This move mirrors the recent law passed in the United States under President Trump.
