Many congratulations to the authors - and also to all who made the long and short lists. The standard was very high!

A very strange choice, but Peter Carey’s Bliss. It was the first piece of contemporary literary fiction I’d ever read - I think I was 17 and so bored of everything I had been reading. Suddenly a door opened into a completely different world of books. I felt like an adult reader for the first time.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

In Diamonds Are Forever the new James Bond (Sean Connery) who was also the old James Bond started the film seeking to avenge the death of the wife the last new James Bond (George Lazenby) had married and who had been killed. Later another James Bond (Roger Moore) killed her murderer. We were fine.
James Bond’s death in No Time to Die is causing a nightmare for the next film. Writers are stuck because Bond “was blown to pieces.”

Anthony Horowitz, author of three 007 novels, says:

“You can't have him wake up in shower and saying it was all a dream."

Tate Britain's Lee Miller exhibition is fascinating - Surrealism, erotica, fashion, World War 2, the camps, the aftermath, and threading it all together, Miller herself, BLAZINGLY, heroically talented, courageous, inspiring.

Don't miss it.

Managing two libraries, I already see how few men borrow/read books for themselves. This kind of crap won't help.
I've been reading in public all my life purely for the pleasure of reading and long before The Independent existed... they can fuck off with this kind of pearl-clutching, mocking, attempt to make me feel bad about it.
