Highlights: Naoya Inoue survives knockdown to win an action thriller over Ramon Cardenas
Naoya Inoue remains undisputed after surviving a 2nd round knockdown to finish off Ramon Cardenas by TKO-8 | Photo by Steve Marcus/Getty Images Naoya Inoue remains undisputed after surviving a 2nd round knockdown to finish off Ramon Cardenas by TKO-8 Naoya Inoue got up from just the 2nd knockdown of his pro career to win an all-action thriller in an ESPN main event from Las Vegas, Nevada. Ramon Cardenas showed a sturdy chin, a tenacious heart, and exceptional timing to give fans by far the best show of a stuffed boxing weekend. But, Inoue was just too much for Cardenas to handle, finishing the challenger off early in the 8th round to retain his undisputed super bantamweight titles. Inoue (30-0, 27 KO) navigated Cardenas’s very fast, sharp jab in the 1st, but started running into trouble in the 2nd. Cardenas (26-2, 14 KO) did quality work inside, bloodying the nose of Inoue in the 2nd and then landing a stunning counter left hand that put Inoue on the canvas. It was very similar to the counter left that Luis Nery floored Inoue with almost exactly a year ago. And it wasn’t a lucky one-shot miracle, as Cadenas kept clipping Inoue with counters to keep himself viable, and even ahead after 4 rounds on unofficial scorecards from ESPN’s Mark Kriegel and Bad Left Hook. Inoue shook Cardenas a little in that 4th round, smiling at his success and pressuring the challenger. But, another nice counter in the 5th, this one a right hand, slowed Inoue down and made him think a little bit about his attack. The 5th was the last real threat from Cardenas, as Inoue hurt him halfway through the 6th and started really unloading. Cardenas fought through it, but took a lot of punishment in the 7th, rallying briefly but suffering a hard knockdown in the final 30 seconds of the round. Trainer Joel Diaz told Cardenas after the 7th that he had one more round to show something, but it was referee Tom Taylor that stepped in to end it early in the 8th when Inoue put Cardenas on the ropes and unloaded against zero return fire. It was a fantastic action fight, one where Cardenas earned himself a lot of new fans, and presumably more paydays in the future. As for Inoue, it’s not a great sign that he got caught and knocked down by the same blind counter left hand again. But, he remains one of two men with a claim for greatest active fighter in the sport, and there’s not much else he needs to work on. He can make fixing it a priority in his next camp before the upcoming September fight against Murodjon Akhmadaliev he announced after his victory. > INOUE JUST GOT CAUGHT. pic.twitter.com/e99cBugE1a > > — Top Rank Boxing (@trboxing) May 5, 2025 > THIS FIGHT DELIVERED ON EVERYTHING. pic.twitter.com/vVSK1QbQh9 > > — Top Rank Boxing (@trboxing) May 5, 2025 > INOUE SENSES BLOOD ‼️ pic.twitter.com/tdv9iUs1ft > > — Top Rank Boxing (@trboxing) May 5, 2025 > KING ****. > > INOUE STAYS ON TOP. pic.twitter.com/Igd1Zo9YxI > > — Top Rank Boxing (@trboxing) May 5, 2025 ## Rafael Espinoza TKO-7 Edward Vazquez A brilliant performance from Rafael Espinoza, who worked his power and size to slow and ultimately stop a game but overwhelmed Edward Vazquez in the 7th round. Espinoza (27-0, 23 KO) was just too much across every axis, surviving the in-close aggression Vazquez brought early, then using a violent uppercut and left to the body to break down Vazquez completely. Vazquez (17-3, 4 KO) would start making an argument for himself in almost every round, blocking Espinoza’s jabs to get inside and unleash his attack, only to get caught with a punishing body shot or an uppercut that split his guard, then have to turtle up to survive. Vazquez is one of the smartest fighters in the game right now, and he obviously came in with a plan to win, not just endure and go the distance. If anything, Espinoza probably won’t get enough credit for the work he did tonight because Vazquez is such an under-the-radar fighter. But, Vazquez didn’t have the power to really punish Espinoza’s defensive lapses, and he couldn’t cover up everywhere at the same time. The power of Espinoza had both Vazquez’s corner and referee Harvey Dock threatening to stop things after the 5th round. Vazquez hung in there a little longer, but wound up cornered without throwing any return fire late in the 7th, which led to a very fair referee stoppage. > HE JUST KEEPS BRINGING IT https://t.co/sgvJY8Uwp0 pic.twitter.com/xGISJtcF0p > > — Top Rank Boxing (@trboxing) May 5, 2025 > A SUPERSTAR IN THE MAKING > > Rafael Espinoza just shined when the lights were bright! pic.twitter.com/j4FBAm0P2M > > — Top Rank Boxing (@trboxing) May 5, 2025

‘I’m not ashamed of losing’: Cardenas content with his effort in loss to Inoue
Ramon Cardenas put up a great effort but it wasn’t enough to come out on top against Naoya Inoue. | Photo by Steve Marcus/Getty Images Ramon Cardenas isn’t hanging his head after coming up short to Naoya Inoue. Ramon Cardenas managed to score what looked like could’ve been a show-stopping knockdown of Naoya Inoue early in their fight, but ultimately Inoue managed to rally back to score an eighth round stoppage. Speaking directly after the loss, Cardenas says he obviously wish he would’ve won the fight but doesn’t feel bad about his performance because his goal has always been to fight the best in the sport, not just maintain an unblemished record. ### Cardenas on his reaction to the TKO loss to Inoue “I feel good. I lost but I don’t feel defeated ‘cause ultimately, I said this, I never said I was going to retire undefeated or be an undefeated fighter. I never once wanted that. I always wanted to fight the best...win, lose or draw, fight the best. You lose versus the best or you beat the best.” ### On looking to work his way back to another world title opportunity “I mean, that’s the plan. My promoter, my manager, everybody’s happy...for me, I’m more content than anything because it’s all about the best fighting the best, win, lose or draw. I went out on my shield, I’m not ashamed of losing ‘cause I went out on my shield.” ### On if he thought he was going to stop Inoue after dropping him hard “No, for me it was more ‘continue the fight’ because he’s pound-for-pound, man. He’s a f-ckin’ great fighter and I knew he was going to continue the fight. When you’re a tough fighter like that you’re not going to just go out like that. Just like me, I would get hit with six, seven shots or I’d have my guard up and I’d smile because I’m not going to go out like that.” ### On if he thinks the stoppage was fair “I will never badmouth the ref for doing what he’s doing or what he did. He saw something that I didn’t, I’m never going to say ‘that was a premature stoppage.’ The ref saw something that I didn’t. I know that I’ll go out on my shield no matter what. My favorite movie is _The Gladiator_ , right, and there’s a quote I always post on my social media and it goes ‘I knew a man who once said death smiles at us all, all a man can do is smile back.’ That’s how I see this fight, that’s how I see boxing.”

Teofimo handles Barboza Jr, calls out Boots Ennis
Teofimo Lopez was sharp and fast in a win over Arnold Barboza Jr | Photo by Cris Esqueda/Golden Boy/Getty Images Teofimo Lopez was sharp and fast in a win over Arnold Barboza Jr, and has his sights set on Jaron Ennis. Teofimo Lopez had his best performance in recent memory tonight in Times Square, retaining his WBO super lightweight title with a clear and deserved decision win over Arnold Barboza Jr. The loss is the first of Barboza’s career, dropping him to 32-1 (11 KO), while Lopez improves to 22-1 (13 KO) and, at least for the moment, probably quiets some critics of some of his other recent outings. Judges scored the fight 116-112, 116-112, and 118-110 for Lopez. Teofimo, 27, was just too fast and too sharp for the 33-year-old Barboza, who seemed to shrink just a bit in his first crack at a world title, though he had some solid rounds. He just didn’t have any real answers for Lopez’s noticeable speed advantage, and Teofimo’s focus never slipped or dipped in this one, as he looked dialed-in. Even when Barboza did catch him and bend his knees a bit with a good right hand, Lopez handled it well, recovered quickly, and got back to the business at hand. At the very least, this was the best-looking Teofimo we’ve seen since his 2023 win over Josh Taylor, and maybe the best since his 2020 win over Vasiliy Lomachenko. The craftiness and solid boxing of Barboza never gave Teofimo much trouble, which we’ve seen happen in past fights and just didn’t tonight. Lopez said he’ll look into moving up to welterweight going forward, and made a call to face unified titleholder Jaron “Boots” Ennis, who is considered the top dog at 147. “I felt great, man, I felt reborn. At 140, I’ve been at this weight for some time, but we’ll talk about going up, maybe,” Lopez said. “I go after the tough challenges, and definitely I want to see ‘Boots.’”

‘Expensive price to pay’: Benn and Eubank Jr react to missed weight
Chris Eubank Jr will forfeit significant money for not making 160 pounds on the dot. | Photo by Richard Pelham/Getty Images Conor Benn has no sympathy for Chris Eubank Jr coming in just a fraction over the 160 pound weight limit. Following today’s weigh-in for tomorrow’s main event between Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn, both fighters spoke a bit about Eubank Jr missing weight which will cost him a £375,000 penalty. Benn says Eubank Jr should have made the weight spot on given that he’s long been fighting at middleweight, while Eubank Jr himself says the significant financial penalty for being just barely over the limit only shows the kind of people he’s dealing with. ### Benn on Eubank Jr missing weight “I mean, it’s an expensive price to pay, isn’t it? You know, he’s disciplined so he should’ve made the weight. He’s made this weight his whole career, he’s expecting a little bit of sympathy but he ain’t got no sympathy around here.” ### Benn on coming in at only 156 pounds “156 is a weight I feel comfortable at. I’m not a 160 fighter, I’m not a 154 fighter, I’m a 147 fighter. So for me, I’m just going to go in there and use my speed, explosiveness, my ferocity — it’s the way I fight. For me it’s not at 160.” ### Eubank Jr on coming in just barely over the 160 limit “Listen, it is what it is. If they’re going to take a half million off of me for being 0.5 pounds off of the limit that’s just what it is — that’s the people that Eddie Hearn and Matchroom and Conor Benn are. At the end of the day weight have no relevance to what happens tomorrow night. I’m going to go out there and stop this guy. “The rehydration clause is still in place so I have to watch what I eat, I have to watch what I drink. But, again, all these things are set up to distract, to displace, to try to get me off of track. None of it will work.”
