you can love a character and still admit when they're wrong. we love Shadow but we can acknowledge his flaws (he has none) and we can hold him accountable for his wrongdoings (he has never done anything wrong in his life) and call him out on his actions (which are always correct)

POSSESSORS (Heart Machine)
Extremely slick metroidvania with a modern hellworld setting (think Devilman). Immediately just *feels* good to jump and attack. They told me the combat was inspired by Smash Bros?? Cool.

Part of what I don't get around the Expedition 33 discourse is that the plot is still chock full of JRPG melodrama. In fact, so much of this game's narrative brings me back to Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (in a good way!)

Expedition 33 really does have the juice. Crazy how they managed to absolutely nail the sincere hopefulness/melancholia at the core of the JRPG genre in such a fresh context.

Blue Prince was great but not quite GOTY level for me. Star of Providence is my current high water mark.

Finally found the time to finish this awesome game. Simply put this is a bigger and better game on all fronts than its predecessor. I expected the writing to be as good as before (and it is), but I didn't expect as big a mechanical jump in quality. Great stuff.

So excited for the follow up
I played every one of these games this year. None of them come close to 1000xResist narratively (and SH2 should not be eligible for this either).
look, games award posting is a losing game but I'm fuckin losin my mind at this. There are two games in this list with a story that even qualifies as "good" and one of them came out in 2001.
