One of its more distinctive traits is actually its boogery cap. Can't leave that out.

I'm used to either trying to speed up the slow half of groups or slow down the fast half, but it was a team effort this time. Just had to stand halfway between the subgroups to maintain sight lines so they didn't lose each other.

I once went on 5 consecutive day long expeditions with a group of lichenologists looking for this lichen based on computer modelling which singled out specific likely habitats using overlapping tree age, hydrology and forest type data to tell us where to look. Nice to finally meet it.

Near is a bit of a borderline term in this case. It was in my home province, but roughly 3-4 hours away in the Shelburne area.

I'm also told he went on lichen hunts in full 3 piece suits. That probably rules out steep slopes. Maybe along one of the brooks.

There are some things you really need to look for specifically to find and I think I would have tunnel visioned my way away from this one's habitat I think. Good to know it will grow in upland poplar habitats, not just on red maples with wet feet.

I have higher hopes for these shells from "Montreal" than the lichenized "mosses". Even if some of these turn out to be endangered they should have already been dead before collected off the beach. Easier to scoop these off the beach than to catch them by hand I would think.
