Researchers led by Dr. Lemmond sequenced their DNA, and found something very interesting; what we thought was a European species wasn’t European at all!! It was a completely new species, uniquely adapted to PNW forests.

Coccidioides posadasii, the causative agent for Valley Fever, is a non-model organism and a really important pathogen to understand better. We are in big trouble if we have a fungal epidemic.

The OSU herbarium houses approximately 700,000 vascular plant, bryophyte, algal, fungal, and lichen specimens. The collections are worldwide in scope, with a focus on Oregon and the Pacific Northwest.
