Never not blown away by the Roman mummy portraits at the British Museum. Not only unmatched till the Renaissance (far as I know, not my speciality I'll admit) but also somehow modern. A feeling of being looked very directly at from two millennia ago.

I gotta say, 'don't speculate' is pretty high up in the list of unrealistic things to ask of the public in the face of a massively disruptive event the cause of which the authorities have no clear answer for.
