Colors are the mood of a piece. If you get your values right they can be whatever colors you like to express the feeling properly.

I'm a big fan of those impasto brushes too. I think it helps to set a few custom shortcuts. In the general - > tools setting you can set that bottom button in kinetic scrolling to click drag and then every panel has the option to click and drag it around (you lose layer click and moving though)
