My latest piece looks at what measures might save most lives: repairing roads, reducing speed limits and tackling bad driving. Taken together Britain should be able to reduce deaths to under 1,000 per year within the next decade.

Although roads are much safer than they were, progress in reducing deaths has slowed over the past decade. The government is working on a new "road safety strategy" that is likely to see it adopt a Scandinavian-like "Vision Zero": the idea that the only acceptable number of road deaths is nil.
