I've looked into it a little more since.
The real-world reason is rigid thinking on the part of toy companies at the time, that toy lines must be segregated along gender lines.

We've seen this before. Unchecked, eventually it'll be any queer people, any non-white people, any non-Christian people, any of the wrong kind of Christian...

That's the thing! In a sense, it's not even about the targeted people being trans. It's the lack of support among even nominally left-leaning and "centrist" people and institutions for trans people. They know they can get away with it.

To me, that is the clear response to the gotcha of medical care for trans prisoners. We should not be the kind of society that denies medical care for prisoners as punishment, and particularly not based on them being an unpopular minority group.
