Bothers me when people discuss Left movements in the U.S. w/out underscoring the GENERATIONS of repression, surveillance, violence directed at movements. The "Left" is so disorganized is used as a joke but I hardly ever see those same people saying 'THE LEFT WAS TARGETED & DISORGANIZED by the STATE'

Is there a word for conflicting and distracting audio inputs? Like someone loudly listening to TikTok videos or listening to music loudly while you are trying to listen to something else with headphones?

When I wrote this for SciAm, the thing that genuinely surprised me most was the number of emails I got (mostly from men) telling me that prior generations of women in science would be ashamed of me for my weakness in writing it.

I think at this point, watching Democrats abandon trans people and Palestinians... I can't support the "blue no matter who" mentally. Probably late to the party here. But the more we allow these cowardly fucks any room to move to the right, the more they will.

Standing by my constant pitch that there should be AIM away messages for text messaging. And profile pages.

My friends were all getting really down yesterday about how pacified the US people are. Why protest when TV? (and shaming themselves as well).

And yes, but also. While protesting is not explicitly a crime, much of the activities involved are...made into crimes (1/ )

Vermont’s Republican Gov. Phil Scott just refused Trump’s request to send the state’s National Guard to D.C., calling the crackdown an improper use of the Guard.

Phil Scott rejects second request to deploy Vermont National Guard, this time to Washington, D.C.
The Pentagon asked Vermont's Republican governor to send a "few dozen" soldiers to assist in President Donald Trump's controversial crime crackdown, according to Scott's chief of staff.

the intensity of my anger at those who would criminalize the homeless — a population literally created by the greed and callousness of the ruling class — is very hard to contain. it was you who dismantled the safety net. if you don’t like the results, put it back

Is there anyone talking about boycotting federal taxes? Like how you can boycott rent and put it in escrow?

Ran relay in a Triathlon and now I must do all of it. Even though I can't ride a bike and panic swimming distances.

Swim training starting tomorrow. The audacity is driving this machine.

A Marx quote that makes me think about workers being forced to use AI by their bosses:

"Even the lightening of the labour becomes an instrument of torture, since the machine does not free the worker from the work, but rather deprives the work itself of all content."

More baby animals. Found this snapper baking on the sidewalk, no water for blocks.
Got it relocated (after checking with state wildlife folks) to a pond in the same general direction it was heading and it seemed to swim off fine!

You ever see a bird and you're like "DANG WHATS THAT BIRD?" So you comb the apps and can't find a match. So you ask your birder friend and say "I thought I saw red on the back of its head but more than a flicker" and they pull "red bellied wood pecker" and it's like you've never seen a bird before

Been having some conversations about sobriety lately and thinking about the different ways it both saved and ruined my life and I think it's interesting how different the experiences of being sober in academia and being sober in the punk scene are. Both hard to navigate but academia is worse

I'll say it over and over.

I do not believe in gate keeping.

I do not believe in pulling up the ladder.

I believe in kicking the wall down like the Kool-Aid man, and making room as I go for those who come next.

Just because it was hard for me, doesn't mean it has to be hard for anyone else.
