The fort gatehouse, granary and vicus at the Castlefield Heritage park are modern reconstructions, so this truly is the foundation stone of the city, and yet astoundingly it has nothing, not even a plaque, to honour it.

The 1849 red brick viaduct that still carries trains in Deansgate Station included a small arch to allow it to remain undisturbed, and today it is rather sadly hidden away behind a pallisade fence in the SiP Collier St Car Park. It's roughly where the '18' is on the map.

The ruins of the settlement were all but destroyed by the building of the Bridgewater Canal (1761), the Rochdale Canal (1802), and no less than 4 rail viaducts (1848, 1849, 1877, 1894) and this is the only part that remains in situ.

Today I went to visit the single oldest man-made thing in Manchester: this block. This is the sole surviving piece of the Roman fort of Mamucium from ~79AD.
