This is pretty standard in big box retail, actually. It's partly for customer service but it's mostly loss prevention. People are (supposedly) less likely to shoplift if they know an employee has seen and acknowledged them.

Thief of Time was the first Discworld book I ever read and it's still one of my favorites!

It occurs to me that my planned switch from a very femme name to a very masc name might change how people respond to my emails. Guess I'll see if I go through with it.

I'll own that its treatment of women has aged less well than the rest of the book but, well, can't win 'em all.

It really, really does. Startlingly prescient. I find myself referring to it quite often.
