I regret disappearing on everyone. I also recognize that I was drowning in my depression and not at all well. I could barely take care of myself, let alone maintain my relationships. I'm still working on both, if I'm being completely honest. anyway. I've lost a lot since then, but I'm thankful I still have my life. manic was also there for me when I finally accepted what my heart had been trying to tell me, that I needed to step away from photography as a career. “a time capsule for manic”
“a time when a piece of halsey’s art appeared beside you right when you needed it”
manic is just as important to me as badlands. somehow, halsey always seems to know what's been going on in my head. I know I'm not the first to say this, but she really does have a gift for making us feel seen and understood. (must be partly because we're both neurodivergent eldest daughters.) I first heard clementine while lying in a hospital bed. it was my second day in the icu, and nurses had been pricking my fingers constantly to make sure my sugar was still going down. I was weary, out of it on pain meds, and my fingers were getting so very sore. hearing those first few lines of the second verse .. yeah I still don’t know how to put the feeling into words. just know I’m crying. my partner and I had been married less than a year when I got sick. I didn’t fully comprehend how dire my situation was until months after, when he recounted being pulled aside by doctors and told he may have to make certain decisions for me. everything that man did, and continues to do to this day.. I know how lucky I am. my heart breaks knowing ash didn't have that same kind of support. I ended up back in the er for emergency surgery that november. when I was finally able to go back to work, I was filled with only gratitude and love. after almost dying, every day was extra. little did I know, the world was about to change completely, too. after I closed out my books in october 2021, I thought I'd take a short hiatus and come back in the new year. my depression and undiagnosed adhd had other plans. I tried so hard to keep going in spite of it all, but my sky is violent rain, and everything hit me so hard that I fell off the face of the earth. I had been surviving since september 2019 and hadn't actually processed any of what I'd been through.

“a time capsule for badlands”
a collage with various memorabilia and clip art, layered with my handwritten journal entry. the full entry will be in the next image, and all the little details will be in the following post. everything will be described and written in the alt text. the day badlands was released, I remember sitting in my childhood bedroom, scribbling down every thought and reaction as I listened for the very first time. it came out exactly when I needed it, though I don’t think I realized it at the time. a lot of my favorite music growing up had a common theme: escapism (fast car, cruz, and breakaway, to name a few) while I was finishing my degree, badlands provided me an entire world to escape to. not only that! but it was created by an artist very much like myself. uncanny in some ways, for sure. I think the best part of this album cycle was going to shows with my sister! we were lucky enough to see her three times within the span of a year. those memories will be treasured for decades. I would finally move miles away in january 2016. I never looked back. now, at nearly thirty years of age, badlands is still a place I go back to — but not because I’m longing for an escape. it is now a resting place, somewhere familiar to sit and wait while the path clears. it’s where I go when I need to be reminded of who I am at my core: someone firm in their convictions, that demands progress and change. a tiny, weepy little baby that has been through so much, and always makes it out the other side.

“how were you first introduced to halsey?”
collage. a photo of 70s halsey. a photo from the vevo lift intro video. the ghost with a sign that’s says “you won’t find me here” is over her face. a scan of my response to the prompt (next photo). a ticket from the smoke and mirrors tour. various clip art from the “for my last trick” website. a golden fabric butterfly, a melting surrealist clock, and various stationary. you told me this is right where it begins.. so, funny story: the first time i heard halsey, i didn’t actually know it was them. my sister played me a video taken by sevian where he’s singing, and then in the background you can hear ash singing along. it was captioned something like “this is how I find out my sister is home” she can tell her story if she would like to, but to put it simply, she was testing the waters to see if I might like her, too. I remember my sister asking me if I thought h was a good singer :,) I believe that was around early 2015. by the time she announced badlands that june, I was already hooked. in july, we bought tickets maybe three hours before the smoke and mirrors tour started because we wanted to see her so badly. and somehow, that was almost a decade ago now.
