The weather forecast for October 30 was sunny and cool, highs in the mid-fifties. The forecast for New York City's future: not so good. Speaking to the National Press Club, President Ford declared flatly: "I can tell you now that l am prepared to veto any bill that has as its purpose a tederal bailout of New York City to prevent default." He had decided along with his advisors, including Chief of Staff Donald Rumsfeld, that the Big Apple represented everything that was wrong with the welfare state and the New Deal approach to government. Letting the liberal city collapse would be an object lesson not just for the nation but for the world. That night, the Daily News managing editor, William Brink, came up with the next day's headline. It read: "FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD." Rumor was that the original idea was "FORD TO CITY: F*** OFF" Still, the fifteen-cent tabloid cover shouted across the five bor-oughs. People snapped up copies and saved them in plastic dry-cleaning bags, as they did with papers covering the Apollo 11 moonwalk and the JFK assassination. still remember a strange mix of anger and pride at the sight of it. One can imagine the millions ot pairs of eyes narrowing at breakfast tables, the curses muttered; commuters paused at news racks, shoulders rolled back, eyebrows arched in New York "You must be kidding me code, middle fingers reflexively flipping up. The rest of the country hated us, sure. But the world responded to Ford's object lesson at the premiere G6 summit in France two weeks later by scolding him that the city's default could create a global economic disaster. And so he backpedaled, extending the city credit with federal spending oversight.

But what placed far higher in our hearts is the incredible BBC3 documentary Daz's Eurovision about the man, the myth, the legend, Daz Sampson. It's a veritable Spinal Tap's worth of hilarious moments, bizarre musical connections, and at least one moment where Daz suggests he's as good a songwriter as Paul McCartney.
