Academic law person at King’s College. Working on feminist, disability & gender things, also in case my employer is reading this: lots of criminal law. Held hostage by my beagle. All views my own & not peer reviewed.
Nothing quite prepares you for how much of your time in academia will be spent sending emails like this

HAI!!! I’m just resting my head here because it’s very comfortable but not that you’ve noticed me perhaps you would like to…give a treat? For a good beagle? Who incidentally happens to be on your arm?

Between the people walking without ever looking up for their phones and the lime bikes blocking the pavement it’s really a tough call what makes central London more infuriating

very, very clearly the most reform breed of dogs. There should be no rules except when they apply for other dogs and all food is mine

Yes, the Beagle is thrilled about daylight savings time, thank you for asking.

Feeling the need for some light relief in my lecture about eugenics, so today my students will be introduced to the fact that every dog breed crossed with a corgi looks like a corgi playing dress up.

I sometimes put the dog in the bathroom while I hide treats around the house she then gets to search for. The problem is she’s now taken to shutting herself in the bathroom in the expectation that treats will appear when I let her out. I’ve basically triggered a beagle cargo-cult…

Officially day 3 of looking like I lost a particularly hostile academic spat. Am debating of investing in an eyepatch perhaps with a nice seasonal spiderweb on it?

Well this is going to be a great look for my teaching this week!

No creature will ever be as majestic as the average Beagle.

Why drink your coffee when you could be petting your beagle?

Beagle on “her“ yoga memory foam pillow which she’s carefully maneuvered on top of the yoga mat. Sadly could not capture the sound of her snoring but imagine someone trying to fix a badly blocked drain.

Breaking news: people supporting homophobic policies from a homophobic party not actually homophobic, people supporting sexist policy from sexist party not actually sexist

They’ve absorbed quite a bit of syrup over night and the sugar is starting to crystallise around the individual chestnuts. They now need to be briefly boiled every 12-18 hours. The sugar dissolves quite quickly in the heat but the syrup is now looking much thicker

They are a different variety! These are called sweet chestnuts and they come in a much spikier shell than conkers do so you have to be careful when you pick them up.

Off they go into their little tupperware home for the next couple of days. Their texture has already changed and they are starting to look a bit glossier
September 27, 2025 at 5:43 PM
10min of boiling in sugar syrup and now they are going to steep overnight. The smell of chestnuts in syrup is already amazing
September 27, 2025 at 5:19 PM
Step 3: peel the chestnuts and start assembling the sugar syrup. Say goodbye to your fingernails.
September 27, 2025 at 4:56 PM
Step 2: boil the chestnuts so I can get the woody peel of them.
September 27, 2025 at 4:54 PM
There is a huge chestnut tree in my dog walking park and there are hundreds of chestnuts everywhere. So I thought I would try my hand at making glacé chestnuts. Step 1: clean up the chestnuts

In case anyone would like to see the beagle in question…
September 15, 2025 at 9:45 AM
And yes it really is just the “we’re not werewolves” meme except with even more limited hours!

Considering I really don’t have the manual dexterity for cake decorating I’m quite pleased with how this came out? Thankfully a judicious amount of sprinkles hides the worst sins. Vegan chocolate and raspberry cake for a friend’s birthday.

I like that they fully committed and redid the whole underpass while they were at it
August 31, 2025 at 9:04 AM
Well there was an England flag here yesterday but I guess the students had a busy night!
