So pleased to see Elsie included in Scottish Field's feature on 50 Greatest Scotswomen, accompanied by this haunting sketch of her by Sandy Morrison @sandysdrawingsroom.

Good morning, I'm a Scottish writer of historical fiction. My most recent novel The Endeavour of Elsie Mackay was published earlier this year and tells the story of the first Scottish woman to gain her pilot's licence and her dream of flying the Atlantic.

A former filmstar with the stage name Poppy Wyndham, she was the wealthy daughter of Lord Inchcape, chairman of P&O shipping line, and worked as interior designer on his ships. Their Scottish home was fairytale Glenapp Castle in Ayrshire.

Elsie intended to be the first woman to fly the Atlantic in either direction and, with Hinch, to make the first successful flight over the Atlantic in the harder east-west direction. She had no need of fame & fortune but wanted to use her achievement to launch her own commercially viable airline.

I've spent today working on some personal letters from 1938 in prep for next book. Then I turned on the news.
Praying America can stop these bullies from destroying everything their nation has stood for, because it wasn't Zelensky who disrespected the Oval Office today.
This was written in Nov 1938.

Losing the Calcutta Cup by 15 points to 16? We’ve done that before.

#TheParisPeacemakers opens with the rugby match between Scotland and England in March 1914. The final score? You’ve guessed it.

I’m sure it hurt just as much that day, but something far darker loomed for all these young men.

Today: writing a talk about #TheParisPeacemakers for Monday, keeping an eye on publicity from yesterday's release of #TheEndeavourofElsieMackay & trying to fit in some research for next book. No wonder my brain's scrambled. Might just watch #StormEowyn through the window instead. #redweatherwarning

Life on the ocean wave! In #TheEndeavourofElsieMackay, Alison, mother of Stella and Corran, sets sail on a Mediterranean cruise with unexpected consequences. The interiors in her P&O liner Ranchi were designed by Elsie. Cruising has changed a bit since 1927 but you could almost call this research!

In #TheEndeavourofElsieMackay the golden age of the ocean liner meets the pioneering world of early flight. A visit to @ntlmuseumsscot.bsky.social Museum of Flight in East Fortune was essential - as of course were the fish suppers in North Berwick afterwards.

To find out more about shipbuilding I visited the Scottish Martime Museum in Irvine where amazingly the vast, cathedral-like engine shed from the Stephen’s shipyard on the Clyde – the actual yard which features in the novel – has been rebuilt.

Clyde shipbuilding was the lifeblood of 1920s Glasgow and runs through #TheEndeavourofElsieMackay too. It was fascinating to explore Govan, the Fairfield Heritage Museum and the site of Stephen’s shipyard, where in 1927 a new P&O liner was under construction, its interior designed by Elsie Mackay.

The fictional lives of Stella & Corran interweave with the true story of pioneering aviator Elsie Mackay. Elsie lived at Glenapp Castle in Ayrshire. It’s now a luxury hotel, so what else would I do but go for afternoon tea in her home? Research is pretty tough sometimes. #TheEndeavourofElsieMackay

#TheEndeavourofElsieMackay picks up the story of the Rutherford family in 1927, 8 yrs after #TheParisPeacemakers ends. Stella and her family now live in Glasgow. To get an insight into their homelife I visited NTS Tenement House, a fascinating ‘time capsule’ of early 20th century tenement living.

The Endeavour of Elsie Mackay will be published on 23 January! Over the next few weeks I'll share some (spoiler-free) posts about significant themes and locations in the book and how I went about researching them. Starts tomorrow. 🛩️

How's your Christmas shopping going?

Book-shaped parcels are the best ones under the tree. Maybe someone you know would like to unwrap The Paris Peacemakers!

1919. Three Scots try to pick up the pieces after the trauma of war as politicians attempt to rebuild the world they have shattered.
