160 years ago, the 13th Amendment was ratified, ending slavery. But that amendment came with a sinister loophole: a Slavery Clause that allowed for slavery “as punishment for crime.”

We need to pass @repnikema.bsky.social’s and my Abolition Amendment to #EndTheException once and for all!
Text of the 13th Amendment: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” The clause “except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted” is crossed out.

She compares the boat strikes to Jesus breaking the sabbath to heal someone.
Ms. Villalba said the second strike was also justified, and she does not believe the United States is indiscriminately targeting boats. "They should have done that strike regardless," she said. "Every human being does have value, but if you're caught up in something that's very detrimental to society, I think that you should die." She compared these strikes to a story in the Bible, when Jesus healed someone on a Sunday, contradicting religious rules that forbid work on that day. Some laws are worth breaking for the betterment of mankind, she said, just like the biblical story was trying to show.

This piece hit hard for me, as it tracks with why my daughter stopped playing soccer at recess. The boys wouldn't let the girls play with them--only against them and with fewer players. But when girls scored anyway, some boys would cheat and play to hurt the girls, to the point where it wasn't fun.
