She knew the voice, knew the blond man’s sorrow-filled eyes would be fixed on the crest of House Fortemps emblazoned on the shield on her back, not the cracked one settled against the grave. A moment passed as his boots crunched closer. “He would be glad,” Francel said softly. She never looked away from the cold stone, nor did she hide the thin metal container trembling in her hand as he came to stand beside her. He said nothing more and only knelt in silence. A few breaths later, he rose again and she wondered what small prayer he’d offered in those brief, frozen seconds. Wondered if they were even for him. She heard his breath hitch, words trying to form, faltering—then the wind took them. There wasn’t anything left to say for either of their souls.

I can tell ya that I'm jealous either which way." I huff, bringing my cigarette back to my lips, and he takes that noise as permission to keep going. "'Course," he starts, that damn grin of his creeping back into full force. "If I had to end up in bed with one of ya, 'm pickin' you. You roll over on me, I can shove ya off. She rolls over on me, she's got pilot pancakes, baby—breakfast in bed." The image earns a chuckle from me. "You wouldn't last five seconds." "Hell yeah, but five fuckin' seconds of heaven, Valentine? Worth the obituary.” The bark of a laugh that follows echoes into the cold air and he doubles down by with a wink before bringing his cigarette back to his grinning mouth. I shake my head, taking another drag. “You’d regret it before the end of the first second.” “Maybe,” he admits, his shoulder rising in that causal shrug of his. “But hell, I’ve made worse mistakes. At least that one’d come with bragging rights.”
