"What a shame that all the mysteries are solved and I know what lies over every hill without ever having to check. It's so boring. I don't even know why I bother."

...

"Oh. I guess I don't."

My mom: "But he was a king."
...
Me: "Even kings ate bread in England in the 10th century."

Me (spastically): "A King around the 10th century who's responsible for uniting England."
My mom: "Did they even mill wheat in England in the 10th century?"
Me: 😐
...
Me: "Yes, they milled wheat and ate bread in England in the 10th century."

...and here's a kick in the pants. See, I loved watching The Last Kingdom, and what I didn't pick up on until I started remembering the show... because I'd been in denial... is that Alfred the Great had the exact same illness I do.

He didn't have Crohn's. He had fucking Celiac and only ate bread. 😅

Because I seem to be recapitulating his First Men shit, and I'm sharp enough to have noticed that ol' George R.R. isn't writing fantasy. He's writing a different version of history with some fantastical elements. And I can't know for sure which parts he thinks are true.

It's of interest right now because in some Germanic languages (including modern German), it's simply "elf," followed by zwolf (tsvelf). Then we return to boring numbers, never to consider the elves again.

...and I'm thoroughly amused that its meaning can reasonably be rendered as "one left behind."

Elvis, I'm told, comes from Scandinavian. The earlier form would be Alvis, meaning "All wise". Funny... the Aelf in Aelfred the Great is also given as "wise" council... even though it can also be rendered as "elven" council.

Funny, funny, funny.

Y'know Alfred The Great? That's more properly rendered Aelf-read... "Elven Council".

He recognized already in that time that the latin people, the people of the Americas, were not indio, or gringo, or asiatico, or negro... but all of the above. Mestizo. Mesclada. That we were a great couldron of races and cultures, swirling together, and revealing secrets long hidden away.
