Updates from the mill. We spin our own yarn and process our own and fleeces from other people.
#wool waterfall. The carding process is simple yet so effective. Really enjoying the simple things that life brings.

Really good visual showing wool spinning under the woollen system. The tiny transverse fibre along the length of the single. It's part of what gives woollen spun #yarn extra warmth.

The result - an Aran / 12ply 2 end #yarn that is a weird light green colour. Not sure how the dark green singles blended that much, but there you go. I'll def be doing more of this - my desire to keep fibre out of landfill is strong 💪

Spinning thick singles as I assume it'll hold the green cut up singles a bit better. It's spinning remarkably well considering its unevenness. But if I can keep the leftover green singles from landfill this might become a regular thing!

Trying something different this Friday afternoon. I have a lot of leftover singles which never completed their journey into #yarn. I've cut up those singles and blended them with some Cheviot and recarded, drafted and are now spinning.

The point where roving is drafted right before the twist is inserted on the spin frame. This is the Light Wood Fae #yarn spinning as a Fingering/4ply.

And the final product. From a greasy fleece on a sheep's back to this skein of #yarn. A #yarn ready to be transformed into a work of art, a jumper, a hat, a scarf or any other creative endeavour.
No harsh chemicals involved!

Steaming the #yarn is a great opportunity to remove any dodgy bits and general quality control. Plus it's the first glimpse of the final product.

The penultimate step.. Plying three ends together for a beautiful DK #yarn. The final step of steaming and skeining up next.
May 13, 2025 at 1:10 AM
A few more steps to go.. Spinning the #yarn singles. It's spinning beautifully. This will be a 3-end DK/8ply yarn, non-superwash woollen-spun. All natural!

The next step in this fleece's journey into #yarn is drafting.
May 9, 2025 at 5:21 AM
The picked fibre is now carding into #roving in preparation for drafting which is the next step on its journey into #yarn.

After spending a few days drying outside under a warm Australian sun it's ready to pick for a second time.
May 6, 2025 at 3:26 AM
Picked fleece ready for the wash and tub of hot soapy water. Will be doing three washes with this fleece.

About half the work I do in the mill is working on raw fleeces for processing into #roving or #yarn. I'm going to post the steps in the whole process. So follow along for all the excitement! 🤗

After dealing with the aftermath of flash flooding in the shed, finally getting some 100 Yarn plyed for this weekend! This is a beautiful heathered rust colour #yarn.

Currently in California. Had to stop in at Anzula for a skein of 100% American Targhee. Beautiful #yarn!

Clare finished the Pressed Flowers pullover with our grey Corriedale #yarn and our colour change 100 #Yarn. Given that it's 100% reclaimed fibre the colours are more subtle.

Tomorrow we're heading off to the Southern Highlands Woolfest at Mittagong RSL. We've got lots of #yarn!
