14. Persona 3: my favorite of the Persona games, a fantastic blast from the past with dating sim elements, strategic combat, and thought-provoking themes
October 23, 2024 at 7:00 PM
13. Shantae: the whole series basically, just a cute and chill series of platformers with vivid art and a great soundtrack
October 23, 2024 at 5:11 PM
12: Disco Elysium: what can I say about this game that hasn’t already been said? Probably the best writing in any video game. A fascinating and evocative world. Unafraid to square up with politics. This game is the great white whale of our time, one of the best ever
October 23, 2024 at 4:13 PM
11. Dragon Age Origins: the swan song for BioWare as they were, Dragon Age Origins was the Baldur’s Gate III of its era and remains an incredible CRPG-style fantasy game with wonderful world building and characters
October 23, 2024 at 4:10 PM
10. Tales of Symphonia: while not my fave RPG (or even my fave Tales game) this game transfixed me so much when I played it that it more or less permanently made me a lover of big involved RPGs
October 23, 2024 at 4:08 PM
9. Pokémon Crystal: not my first pokemon game, but the one that made me love the franchise. That chiptuney soundtrack and charming sprites always bring me back
October 23, 2024 at 4:05 PM
8. Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door: one of my favorite games I keep coming back to that just gets better with age. Incredible writing, lovable characters, and charm and heart make this a must-play
October 23, 2024 at 4:02 PM
7. Donkey Kong Country 2: so many hours in my childhood left transfixed as I watched my uncle play this. I know the songs and levels by heart. To me, this game is childhood
October 23, 2024 at 3:59 PM
6. Link’s Awakening: one of my first games ever, and one that always spoke to me with its wistfulness. The remake is fun but OG can’t be topped
October 23, 2024 at 1:56 AM
5. Metroid Prime: one of the most atmospheric games ever and my go-to fave for years. Still holds up almost a quarter century later
October 23, 2024 at 1:46 AM
4. Elden Ring: my *other* favorite game. Wonderful lore, incredible beauty, challenging difficulty, and it’s so massive. I could play this forever
October 23, 2024 at 1:41 AM
3. Fallout New Vegas: in a list of my “favorite games” the #1 spot is a cage match between this and the next game I’ll post. Beautiful desert landscape, perfect blend between guided plot and open-world exploration, and impeccable writing and story
October 23, 2024 at 1:25 AM
2. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky: I think everyone saw this coming. One of my most formative games and one I continue coming back to time and time again
October 23, 2024 at 1:19 AM
1. Mass Effect: All these years later and these games still sucker me in so much. The world building, the characters, it was sublime. Nothing like it has hit me since.
