Derek’s fundraiser has reached $4750 so far! Donate and boost here: bit.ly/dereksupport

Our goal is to raise $15K on Derek’s behalf, giving him funds to recover after the storm, purchase a used car, and perhaps even save a little along the way. As his editors, collaborators, and movement journalism community, we hope to do everything possible to help his reentry. bit.ly/dereksupport

Not only is Derek now in desperate need of resources to replace what he lost in the flood, but he also needs a car for parole appointments (20 miles away from his home and inaccessible by public transit) and transportation to find a new full-time job outside of his freelance journalism work.
May 14, 2025 at 11:37 PM
In April, Torrential rainfall inundated the region & the Kentucky River flooded, destroying the home & his belongings. Derek has spent the last few weeks cleaning in knee-deep mud. Like many formerly incarcerated people he was already working with limited funds and resources to restart his life.

Respected by his prison community, Derek served as a writing facilitator, mentor, & regular in Shakespeare Behind Bars. He won multiple PEN Prison Writing Awards & playwriting competitions & published in @haymarketbooks.org The Sentences That Create Us: Crafting A Writer's Life in Prison

Writer Derek Trumbo is now free, & he needs our help. Derek is an award-winning writer and @prismreports.org columnist. After almost two decades of incarceration, Derek received parole on April 1, but just days after leaving prison, disaster struck the home he's been staying in. bit.ly/dereksupport

Starting this month, for transparency with our readership, to share what goes into shaping a @prismreports.bsky.social's piece, and credit the editorial team for their stellar work, you will now see an editorial byline at the bottom of our articles.

"Anarchist proponents of violence like Errico Malatesta, Johann Most, and Luigi Galleani saw attacks as a necessary response to the oppression of the working class, immigrants, poor people, and the enslaved."

Daniel Penny's background as a Marine has a lot to do with how the state views his violence as acceptable—similar to police executions. Immunity extends to people like Penny and it reminds me of this piece by @williamcson.bsky.social for @prismreports.bsky.social

Lynching, shooting at, and locking up Black people and systematically letting Black people die through state inaction (and action) within the construct of white supremacy will almost always be acceptable within the U.S.

May Jordan Neely rest in power.

Daniel Penny choked Jordan Neely to death. The jury is currently deliberating the case. Last year I wrote this for @prismreports.bsky.social:

Spending my week off by making the house a bit more functional and cute! This area of the entrance is where we get our dog’s coats and leashes on and it needed something better than just a basket!

My work in movement journalism and with Prism is a big part of who I am. I believe it plays a role in liberation. It’s why I am proud to be a cofounder of the Movement Media Alliance and its first project, Media Against Apartheid & Displacement

I was born and raised in Geneva, Switzerland and I moved to the U.S. 14 years ago. I’m now based right outside of Philly in a cute little town with lots of parks and space for my two dogs whom I’m obsessed with. (Frankie on the left, Sria on the right)

(Re-)introducing myself if you don’t know me through media, organizing, or early days of twitter (🥲). I’m Lara, the EIC of @prismreports.bsky.social (as of April, was editorial director before then). I used to be with the now-shuttered Wear Your Voice magazine and I freelanced for national mags.
