Shaimaa recently shared the following about her father’s worsening condition:
My father, 72 years old, is battling a urinary bladder tumor. His recent CT scan revealed a new mass, indicating that the cancer has returned after his previous surgery. According to the doctors, his condition now requires a complete bladder removal, a procedure that is impossible to perform in Gaza due to the collapse of the healthcare system and the severe shortage of surgical resources and medications. The health sector here is deteriorating day by day. Hospitals are operating far below capacity, and cancer medications and essential treatments are almost completely unavailable. Like hundreds of other patients, my father is waiting for a chance to live, urgently needing medical evacuation abroad before his condition worsens further. I’m writing to you as a daughter searching for a glimmer of hope to save her father. I’m on the verge of emotional collapse. I kindly ask for your help in amplifying his case or reaching out to humanitarian or medical organizations that might assist in arranging his transfer for treatment abroad

Not only is Derek now in desperate need of resources to replace what he lost in the flood, but he also needs a car for parole appointments (20 miles away from his home and inaccessible by public transit) and transportation to find a new full-time job outside of his freelance journalism work.
What are we fundraising for? Derek was already working with limited funds and resources to restart his life after receiving just a few cents a day for each hour of work he performed inside. Not only is Derek now in desperate need of resources to replace what he lost in the flood, but he also needs a car For: Parole appointments that are located more than 20 miles away. As a requirement of his parole, Derek must find full-time employment in Kentucky outside of his writing work, creating even more need for reliable transportation. Our goal is to raise $15K on Derek’s behalf, giving him funds to recover after the storm, purchase a used car, and perhaps even save a little along the way.

In April, Torrential rainfall inundated the region & the Kentucky River flooded, destroying the home & his belongings. Derek has spent the last few weeks cleaning in knee-deep mud. Like many formerly incarcerated people he was already working with limited funds and resources to restart his life.
What are we fundraising for? Derek received parole on April 1, allowing him to leave Kentucky’s Northpoint Training Center after almost two decades of incarceration. Derek’s future is bright. He plans to finish the degree he started in prison and begin work on a book with a literary agent he secured while incarcerated. But there are also ways in which his life will continue to be challenging. Like many formerly incarcerated people re-entering society, Derek was already working with limited funds and resources to restart his life after receiving just a few cents a day for each hour of work he performed inside. Just days after leaving prison, the home where Derek was staying near the Kentucky River flooded after torrential rainfall inundated the region. Post-release, Derek has spent the last few weeks performing clean-up in knee-deep mud.

Breaking News: Gaza ceasefire deal announced after 466 days of genocide and 46,000 dead (source: truthout) logo: Media Against Apartheid & Displacement) Optimism around Gaza ceasefire must be cautious. There are three phases to this deal. The first six-week phase would comprise of: “Full & complete” ceasefire & retreat of Israeli troops to designated zones in Gaza, Palestinians allowed to return to homes, Allowing entry of humanitarian aid, Gradual release of Israeli captives & Palestinian prisoners, The second & third phases’ details are to be ironed out during the first six-week phase. “The U.S. is the supply line of this war. So if they are serious about guaranteeing this agreement, they can see it through.” —Sultan Barakat, a public policy professor Ahead of the announcement, Israel had escalated its assault of Gaza as a final push of extremely intense bombardments. Israeli forces bombed a school-turned-shelter & homes across the Strip, killing 62+ people over the last reporting period. Israeli forces also carried out a strike in Jenin. In their attack on homes in the Strip, Israeli forces killed a one-year-old girl, her parents, grandfather, & uncle. In a separate attack, Israeli forces struck & killed four children. In the past 15 months of Israel’s genocide, Palestinian officials have estimated that Gaza’s population has plunged by 6%, with 200,000+ people having fled the territory or been killed or injured by Israeli forces. It is officials from Israel, not Hamas, that have acted as the main roadblock during ceasefire talks Western media outlets & officials like President Joe Biden & Secretary of State Antony Blinken have repeatedly blamed Hamas negotiators for blocking deals for a ceasefire & hostage exchange. As reports showed, these claims have been false from the start: Hamas quickly accepted the U.S.’s three-phased ceasefire proposal after Biden announced it last spring, while Israeli officials have continuously disrupted talks & said that they will not stop until they’ve achieved their ever-shifting, exterminationist war goals.

Daniel Penny's background as a Marine has a lot to do with how the state views his violence as acceptable—similar to police executions. Immunity extends to people like Penny and it reminds me of this piece by @williamcson.bsky.social for @prismreports.bsky.social

Fascism requires fear, and state forces use public execution to make an example of a victim to maintain an environment of fear. A lynching isn’t only to satisfy the bloodthirst of empowered spectators; it’s also done to invoke fear in witnesses from oppressed populations. People’s bodies become warning signs that say, “you could be next” or “you will be next if you don’t stay in your place.” So if this place is nothing more than a country that is a bordered execution chamber, are we living or waiting to die or be killed?

Lynching, shooting at, and locking up Black people and systematically letting Black people die through state inaction (and action) within the construct of white supremacy will almost always be acceptable within the U.S.

According to New York state laws, a person can use physical force against another person if they have a “reasonable belief” that it is necessary to defend themselves or others. But in a country that always perceives Blackness as an inherent threat, that perceives Black men as taller, stronger, and more threatening than they are thanks to the psyche and construct of whiteness itself, that reasonable belief then hinges on a system that, for centuries, defined whiteness as humanity and Blackness as sub-human.

Spending my week off by making the house a bit more functional and cute! This area of the entrance is where we get our dog’s coats and leashes on and it needed something better than just a basket!
