Coming later this month: THE WAY OF WIND AND RAIN, my latest #sciencefiction novel!

It’s my most personal, expressive book so far. Also the darkest, the most tragic. You’ll love it.

This Week in Modern #Philosophy with me...
October 6, 2025 at 6:25 PM
Last week in my Modern #Philosophy class, I talked about David Hume, and how he threw a wrench into the gears of the great #Enlightenment project of universal reason.

So, this week, we awaken from our dogmatic slumbers.

My sister Roisin Derbis is quite a wonderful artist. And now she has an Instagram page to share her work. Everybody go look!

A curious algorithmically-generated juxtaposition of these two YouTube videos: this is me photographing my TV.

It makes me wonder: is there some kind of modern or common understanding that a statement must be "painful" or "brutal" to be true?

Want to read a short story of mine, for free?

"The Golden Mushrooms", available on my Substack:

brendanmyers.substack.com/p/the-golden...

It's an allegorical tale (you'll see!) about a team of space explorers sent to a jungle planet to search for the previous team.

I finished #writing my new #sciencefiction novel! And sent it to the publisher.

When it comes out, THE WAY OF WIND AND RAIN will be my 28th book. Can't say yet when that will be, except that the publisher will make an announcement next month.

Writing it took a lot out of me. I need a nap.

Here’s me signing the limited-edition hardcover copies of WHISPERLIGHTS for the Kickstarter backers

Got your copy yet? Reading it yet? What do you think?

(I did not know until I saw this photo that I’m going more grey. But I earned it!)

“Spirit is undying life. Life is always progressing. The supreme in painting is to imitate that spiritual movement, the act of being.”

—Emily Carr. Self portrait, 1939. (She was sixty-seven years old and a heart attack survivour, when she painted this.)

It’s one of those special nights when I’m home alone, and I’ve poured a glass of wine, and I’m exploring a wonderful little world that you, too, can explore, when the book is published.

Some day I might look back on this moment and say, ‘It was a more innocent time…’

I spent the afternoon today in the National Gallery. It was more helpful that staying home, for clearing my mind and finding new thoughts.

Used #bookstores are such magical places. Here's one of the treasures I found today, which I bought purely for the inscription. And now I wonder who these people were, and how this book happened to make its way to Ottawa.

I bemoan #solitude sometimes. But on other nights, it’s absolutely glorious.

It’s past midnight. I’m alone in the house. I’m playing Lisa Gerrard and Sigur Ros. My imagination carries me to landscapes of love and mystery. I do my best #writing on such nights.

How can I express this to you?

I dreamed about baking bread last night; I used to do that all the time in my 20s. So I made two small loaves today, for the first time in years.

This time, I added some rosemary and a small amount of honey. It smells so nice.

Sometimes I play with the scammers.

And sometimes, they come clean to me when they grasp they’re getting no money. This question featured here tends to instigate either an immediate blocking by the scammer, or the most astonishing conversations about their taskmasters.
