American composer Ernst Bloch was not directly affected by the Holocaust but his music was considered degenerate by the Nazi regime. #OTD in 1933 he welcomed Arnold Schoenberg into exile in New York.

Conductor and author Emil Kahn (born #OTD in 1896) left his native Germany in 1933 arriving in the US in 1935. He led the Senior Orchestra of New York for 13 years and taught at Montclair State College until 1970.

Susanne Hirzel was born #OTD in 1921. In late 1942, while a music student, she met Sophie Scholl, who called for resistance. She and her brother Hans were arrested and convicted in the 2nd "White Rose" trial.

Austrian-American concert pianist Paul Wittgenstein was born #OTD in 1887. He lost an arm fighting in WWI and afterwards championed piano for the left hand. During WWII the Nazis charged him with 'racial defilement' and, in 1938, he fled to New York.

Violinist Alma Rosé was born #OTD in 1906. In Auschwitz a request was made for a violinist for a VIP birthday celebration. She impressed the guards with her virtuosity and, in 1943, was made conductor of the women’s orchestra in Birkenau.

Rozika Ovitz (2nd from left) was born #OTD in 1886 with pseudoachondroplasia. Rozika was a violinist with the Lilliput Troupe who, after capture in Hungary, were subjected to experimentation by Joseph Mengele in Auschwitz.

Poet, translator, journalist and diplomat Camill Hoffmann was born #OTD in 1878. He helped Leos Janacek bring opera to German stages. Gestapo arrested him in 1942 and deported to Terezin. 2 years later, he and his wife died in Auschwitz.

Czech voice teacher and composer, Konrad Wallerstein was born #OTD in 1879. At the Prague Conservatory he finished the 3 year course in only 2. He and his wife were sent to Terezin on 13 Jul 1943 then on 28 Oct 1944 to Auschwitz where they were murdered.

Composer, musicologist and music critic Marius Flothuis (born #OTD 1914) lost his job at the Concertgebouw Orchestra after refusing to join the RKK. He was arrested for resistance and deported to Sachsenhausen in 1944. He continued composing and survived.
