Also, I must admit the photo on this is from 1988 and you'd never see a Dublin street scene like this now. This alley is now probably either ludicrously expensive micro-houses or somewhere where the Dublin branch of Meta stores its bins.

Yes, you'd be shocked if the PP were in favour. The ambivalence lies in no one seeming to greatly credit the city for the decision, whether they approve or oppose it. That places those responsible in a disappointing position (for them) that hardly incentivises future action.

Her attempts to become a national presidential candidate, meanwhile, went very badly. Bowing out after two terms in Paris might be the most prudent way to protect her legacy.

Popular city mayors can survive their parties' decline at national level, but it's always tough - and Hidalgo's policies are partly shaped (not necessarily in an unhealthy way) by the Greens and Communist minority partners in her coalition, without which it would not be tenable.

Hidalgo represents a party, the Socialists, that have been substantially eclipsed nationally. Balanced between the centre and the left, the party now leads neither political sector. It's the fourth largest party in a National Assembly it dominated for decades.

That's not a criticism per se, it just reflects how city elections often hinge on wider domestic pressures that international observers are less aware of or interested in.

It is true that Hidalgo's international prestige has not been matched equally by local popularity for a while - she won a second term mainly because her main opposition imploded.
