Turns out that dwarves can be rather rowdy with their alcohol and slop some when they drink.
You couldn't see it, but the game tracked it. The cats would get some on their paws and inadvertently drink some when they cleaned themselves and die of alcohol poisoning.

Reminds me of an old bug when all of the cats were dying. Nobody knew why.

Ideally, instead of removing it, it would be patched to not break anything else and turn into a gameplay mechanic.
