Most sugar consumed in the UK pre-WW1 was sugar beet. 1908 was a key swing point for cane sugar as we saw refineries taking cane sugar close in Bristol. Cane sugar from the Caribbean largely went into the USA at this point. We often overlook other large producers such as Australia.

I used to live in and still visit Spalding so about 15 miles from John Clare's cottage which is nearer Stamford not far from Deeping Fen.

Alot more coal tits, long-tail tits, goldcrests, greenfinches and chaffinches around my house in the middle of Amble today.
